Discussion on alternative scheme of traditional paper – plastic composite flexible packaging

At present, the paper plastic flexible packaging of dry food and water-containing food is mainly used in coffee, nuts and cereals, infant formula, snack food, biscuits, grain and oil products or dairy products. The main structure is 4 layers of composite multi-component structure, the barrier material is basically aluminum foil, aluminum coated PET and PVDC coating, oxygen barrier and water vapor barrier can reach a good level, meet the requirements of more than one year shelf life, in transport and shelf life can well protect the freshness of food. But the environmental quality of paper-plastic composite can not actually produce recycling value.
As flexible composite packaging materials cannot be sorted into paper and plastic in recycling facilities, major developed countries promoting low carbon and sorted recycling will explicitly limit the amount of paper and plastic composite packaging used, reducing the pressure of composite material recycling and the total amount of paper and pulp reprocessing.
Packaging structures with high paper content can be recycled, repulped or composted, but do not provide sufficient barrier protection for food to prevent oxidation of contents or moisture deliviation in hot and humid environments. Maintaining freshness and product safety during shipping, shelf life and home use is a challenge.
Flexible food packaging barrier material, coating or co-extrusion film structure, at the same time in transportation, shelf life and consumer use period has a stable barrier oxygen and water vapor performance, in order to maintain the freshness of food.
